"Ben Langat, the managing director of FrieslandCampina WAMCO, discussed the company's 50 years of existence and the state of Nigeria's dairy industry in an interview with Josephine Okojie. When asked about the Nigerian identity of FrieslandCampina WAMCO, Langat emphasized that the company is truly Nigerian. WAMCO, originally registered as West African Milk Company in 1973, evolved into Friesland Foods WAMCO Nigeria PLC in 2005 and then FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc in 2009. As Nigeria's leading dairy nutrition company, FrieslandCampina WAMCO's popular brands, such as Peak Milk and Three Crowns Milk, have been nourishing Nigerians for decades. Langat also highlighted the company's commitment to local dairy development since 1984, sourcing raw milk from Nigerian farmers and running factories that utilize local milk. However, he acknowledged that the current local milk production is still insufficient to meet the nation's dairy demands. Regarding sustainability, FrieslandCampina WAMCO works with farmers in various states, promoting animal welfare, environmental conservation, and responsible resource use. Langat acknowledged the challenges of forex rationing and insecurity, which impact the company's operations, and expressed the need for sufficient forex supply and security in the dairy development host communities. Despite these challenges, FrieslandCampina WAMCO reported significant revenue growth in 2022 and emphasized the importance of revenue growth management in protecting and reinvesting in the business. Looking ahead, Langat expressed the expectation that the government would consult industry leaders like FrieslandCampina WAMCO on dairy development matters before making policy decisions."
