The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to address the increasing cost of poultry feed in the industry. Mojeed Iyiola, the Chairman of PAN in Lagos State, raised concerns about the escalating prices of feed, which is having a negative impact on the productivity of the poultry sector.
Expressing gratitude for the new administration, Iyiola emphasized the need for measures to reduce the cost of feed in the industry. He mentioned that the price of feed is rising daily and becoming unsustainable for poultry farmers. Iyiola disclosed that the association is currently engaged in discussions with the government regarding maize intervention, as the cost of maize supplied to them is even higher than the market price. He urged the government to intervene and lower the price of feed.
According to Iyiola, government intervention would help stabilize the sector. Lowering the cost of poultry materials would subsequently reduce the prices of poultry products, making them more affordable for average Nigerians. He also urged the new administration to continue the national school feeding program, emphasizing the importance of incorporating eggs into the meals instead of solely relying on fish, as it negatively affects poultry farmers.
Iyiola further appealed to the government to invest in infrastructure to boost the value chain of the poultry sector. While acknowledging the efforts of the Lagos State Government in providing an egg powder machine, he called for similar infrastructure investments at the federal level to address issues such as recurring egg glut. By doing so, the poultry sector could overcome challenges and enhance its overall productivity.
In conclusion, the Poultry Association of Nigeria has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the rising cost of poultry feed. They seek measures to reduce feed prices, continuation of the school feeding program with the inclusion of eggs, and infrastructure investments to support the poultry sector's value chain.
