The Kano State Agropastoral Project (KSADP) and Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) have begun distributing farm inputs to farmers across the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State. This initiative aims to increase yield per hectare, generate wealth, and enhance farmers' income. Dr. Godwin Atser, the Country Director of Sasakawa Africa Association, emphasized the organization's commitment to supporting the government in improving agricultural productivity and competitiveness. The distribution of inputs, which will last for a week, will ensure that beneficiaries receive them promptly and have enough time for essential pre-season activities such as land preparation. The project coordinator, Comrade Abdulrasheed Hamisu Kofarmata, highlighted the role of SAA in addressing challenges faced by smallholder farmers through the distribution of improved seed varieties, herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides, as well as training. Furthermore, SAA/KSADP plans to establish demonstration plots and community-based seed multiplication plots to promote the adoption of new farming technologies and increase crop productivity. The project aims to improve food, nutrition, and income security for smallholder farmers, with the SAA tailoring agricultural technologies and practices to meet their specific needs. The State Program Coordinator, Mr. Ibrahim Garba, expressed gratitude to SAA for delivering the inputs ahead of the planting season and encouraged farmers to use them effectively. The Kano State Agropastoral Development Project (KSADP), funded by the Islamic Development Bank (ISDB) and Lives and Livelihood Funds, aims to address challenges in the agriculture sector and improve the productivity, income, and livelihoods of 450,000 smallholder farmers across the state. SAA, as a technical partner, implements the crop component of the project, focusing on various value chains such as rice, maize, millet, sorghum, tomato, cabbage, and onions. Through a multi-pronged approach including Regenerative Agriculture (RA), Market-Oriented Agriculture (MOA), and Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture (NSA), the project aims to foster economic growth centered around agriculture and create a resilient and sustainable food system in Kano State.
