In the third quarter of 2023, Nigeria expended N331.76 billion on wheat imports, N157.34 billion on sugar imports, and N50.78 billion on fish imports. A comprehensive analysis by BusinessDay reveals a total spending of N539.88 billion on these three food items during the period.

The Q3 2023 foreign trade report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) highlights that 83.87 percent of the country's agricultural import value, amounting to N643.68 billion, was allocated to durum wheat, cane sugar, mackerel, and other fish.

"The major agriculture goods imported in Q3, 2023 included ‘Durum wheat (not in seeds)’ from Poland with N90.46 billion and Canada with N73.03 billion."
