In line with the plans of the Federal Government, the Niger Delta Development Commission is collaborating with large-scale farm holdings in the region to enhance food security and promote agro-allied productivity.

Mrs. Winifred Madume, the Director of Agriculture and Fisheries at the NDDC, headed a commission delegation on a visit to some notable farm holdings in Delta State on Wednesday. The farms visited include Adventium Songhai Delta Nigeria Limited, Emmppek Farms, and Okemute Farms, which are situated in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area.

According to her, “the essence of the visit is to assess the farms’ infrastructural facilities and their readiness to key into the initiative of the Commission.

While addressing farm owners at their respective farms, Mrs. Madume stated that the food security agenda was an initiative of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of NDDC. 

She emphasized that this scheme aligns with the federal government’s policy, highlighting the importance of stakeholders’ involvement in the development process. 

Mrs. Madume further explained that the agricultural intervention aims to educate youths in the region on the business aspects of agriculture, thereby making the sector more attractive to them. She mentioned that the agricultural programme was ongoing simultaneously in Imo, Abia, Edo, and Ondo States, among others.

She said, “NDDC is interfacing with the identified farm holdings in the region on their challenges, areas of needs, and why the nation is still unable to feed its people.

“The Commission’s working tour is to explore areas of collaboration mainly on how to absorb agro-allied trainees. In addition to organising necessary training for prospective farmers, particularly interested retirees.

“Upon compiling our diverse field reports, we will present our findings to the Group Managing Director for decisive action, all in pursuit of securing food in the region and ultimately, across Nigeria.”
